Our Mission

CogNeW aims to use innovative technologies to personalize clinical interventions and share knowledge with the scientific community and the public. Beginning with basic cognitive functions, our core goal is to increase human wellbeing: living a satisfied, happy life. To achieve that goal, we study how to improve cognitive and motor functions along the continuum from basic to clinical models in humans. In tandem, we study the social and moral context of our work in our effort to resolve ethical dilemmas on personal and societal scales.

Principles

Integrity
We are committed to pre-register our studies, avoid cherry picking, and aim to produce original research. We will report both positive and negative results and uphold clarity and rigor in our scientific reporting and communication.

Inclusiveness, Respect, & Collaboration
CogNeW lab members are inclusive and respectful toward our study populations, one another, new ideas, and our varied identities and values. We appreciate collaboration, team science, and creating new connections to grow both professionally and personally. In addition, credit is given where credit is due.

Teaching & Mentorship
Lab members acknowledge and respect our various backgrounds, experiences, and interests as we openly share ideas, teach each other, and apply a strong mentorship model.

Persistence & Growth
Most ideas are wrong, and many treatments fail. The CogNeW lab asks, “How can we do it?” despite setbacks and challenges. Central to our team’s efforts is our willingness to take risks and respond to successes and failures with a positive attitude. As individuals, we seek self-fulfillment by pursuing our joint and individual passions.
